Pallet Container VS Wooden Packing Crates VS Pallet Collars

Pallet Container VS Wooden Packing Crates VS Pallet Collars

Shipping, storage and packaging options are one of the most important decisions a business has to make. Choosing the right packaging options for your products can mean:

  • Cost savings

  • Improved revenue

  • Easier product dissemination

  • Safer operations

There are three prime objectives when you are considering your packaging needs. How much will it cost? Is it an efficient solution? Will it enhance storage and shipping capabilities?

There are three tried and true methods of packing/shipping/storing goods for distribution. Pallet containers, wooden packing crates and pallet collars. Each of the three options are good options for different applications but only one of the options is ideal for all applications.

Successful Logistics is an Advantage

The global market is the here and now and logistics is the key to making or breaking many businesses in this highly competitive market. Your organization should be looking for sustainable, recyclable shipping/packing/storing options.

Choosing the right packing/shipping/storage options can give your organization the logistic advantages over your competition. Reducing risk and keeping your product chain flowing comes down to utilizing the right method for your packing/shipping and storage needs.

Costly containers that are not easily recycled or that do not allow the flexibility that you need can slow down your business to a grinding halt.  We will look at pallet containers, wooden packing crates and pallet collars to compare the pros and cons of all three and how they can affect the success of your business.

Storage

Storage is one of the most important functions of any packing option.  Making the most of your warehouse space and storage facilities is key in keeping down costs.

Pallet containers are standardized, while you can order custom containers the cost goes up when you do. Pallet containers can be constructed from wood, corrugated cardboard or plastic. There are “fixed wall” pallet containers and “collapsible” pallet containers. Collapsible containers can be folded when not in use. The fixed wall cannot.

The material that the pallet container is made of will dictate how high you can stack these types of containers. The load bearing for stacking is not that high. Typically is the recommended limit for corrugated models.

Wooden packing crates can withstand more weight when stacked and they are offered in many more sizes for example:

45cm X 45cm X 45cm can hold up to 125 kg but can be stacked under the weight of 5443 kg

60 cm x50 cm X 50cm can hold up to 136 kg but can be stacked under the weight of 5443 kg

121 cm X 76cm X 76cm can hold up to 1134 kg and can be stacked under the weight of 4535 kg

Wooden packing crates seem like a great option for storage purposes until you consider the cost. The cost for wooden packing crates can range in cost greatly.  Depending on the type of wood and the size of the crate.

Pallet collars are a different type of pallet wall. This kind of solution has gained popularity worldwide in the last 20 years. Pallet collars have been in use for about 20 years. They were originally invented to work with the automotive industry but are now commonly used in a full range of industries. They are unique in that they can easily customize any pallet.

Pallet collars are typically 195mm in height and are hinged so that they can fold flat but when stacked together they create a sturdy wall surrounding the pallet and the goods that are contained within the pallet collars.

According to the international standard EN 13545:2003 pallet collars should be able to carry up to 6000kg and use the vertical storage space in your warehouse. They are usually made of wood but they can also be made of plastic.

They also have the added advantage of saving space in the warehouse and shipping because you do not need to have full walls on the pallet when they are not necessary.

Ease of Use

Choosing a container option that is easy to use can reduce the costly risk associated with work place injuries. Ease of use also reduces the amount of training time that is needed for employees.

Pallet containers are easy to use but they can be difficult to customize. Wooden packing crates are difficult to use and difficult to customize. Both of these options require the use of tools to both put together and take apart the container.

Pallet collars do not require any tools and are fully customizable. They are easier to use and a more efficient means of moving goods and products.

Benefits

Each option has a specific set of benefits.

pallet collar benefits

For example wooden packing crates are ideal for fragile items, light weight items and items that will be stored for a long period of time. Wooden packing crates are often used for garments and food items.

They are more secure than the other two options listed here which can help to keep unauthorized persons out of the crates. They are often used to ship and store valuables because of their higher security capabilities. They are also available in a wide variety of sizing options.

Pallet containers are ideal for displaying items in bulk like at a local box store. Corrugate pallet containers are lighter weight than other options which can be an ideal solution to save on shipping costs. They are easier to move which reduces risk of injury.

Pallet containers can be moved safely by one person on a fork lift or a pallet jack which means that there are less people that can be injured during movement.  Less exposure equals less risk.

Pallet collars can be reused many times over. They can be folded flat for easy storage and return. They are also less expensive than the other two options. They are very customizable.

They can be used to carry a full range of materials because they are a fully customizable option.  Of course they are also safer to use than other options like shrink wrap that may fail and cause the contents to spill out.

Pallet collars also offer you the option of removing the top layers of goods, then remove the collar to easily reach the next layer of goods and removing each additional collar as you move down toward the bottom of the load.

Cons

Wooden packing crates are more secure than other options but from a warehousing stand point they can take up more manpower hours than the other two options to put together, take a part and move around.  They also do not offer any adjustment possibilities so if you do not have a full load they will take up warehouse space.

Pallet containers (especially corrugated cardboard) are not as durable as the other two options. They also may take up unnecessary space if they are not completely full.  There is no potential for height adjustment if you have less than a full load.

Pallet collars are easy to assemble, completely secure, easy to recycle and reuse. Pallet collars are the one selection that does not really have any cons.

Cost Effectiveness

Keeping costs down while not abandoning the integrity of the products or goods is of course an important aspect of any organizations logistics. Cost of any solution goes beyond what you are paying out of pocket.

Total cost =out of pocket expense + usability. When you are considering a packing solution you have to consider the out of pocket expense for the unit, then consider the usability of the unit AND the reusability of the unit.

Wooden packing crates by far are the most expensive option. They usually have a greater up front cost. They typically require more work to load and unload.  They are highly unlikely to be used more than once because they are either nailed or stapled shut.

Opening can cause damage to the wooden packing crates. They are the most secure option of the three but the cost can be prohibitive if you use this as a permanent solution that is used often.

Pallet containers are less expensive when it comes to the initial out of pocket expense but they are rarely able to be reused more than a couple of times.

Pallet collars are relatively inexpensive when you compare them to the other two options, they are highly usable and can be reused many times over.  They are also the simplest to use making them the safest option of the three.

Overall

All three options are good solid options but clearly choosing the most expensive option is not the best way to do business. Either the cost will have to be passed on to your customers or it will cut into the profits.

In some situations the more expensive option would be the best option but in most cases the least expensive option will provide a similar level of secure transport and storage for a fraction of the cost.

Pallet collars can be the ideal solution in most every case because they provide safe, secure packing/shipping/storage ability without the expense.  They are well worth consideration for any organization that is looking for an affordable solution.
